What to do in the garden in January
- Continue digging over the vegetable garden, then leave for the winter weather to help break up the soil.
- Spread compost onto cultivated soil, then cover with black plastic to both keep the soil warm and dry, but also to keep it clean and weed free.
- Prune standard apple, pear, currant and gooseberry trees and bushes.
- Buy fruit trees and bushes to plant while they are dormant.
- Now's the time to be planning ahead and deciding which vegetable and herb plants you'll be growing this year.
- Use our helpful delivery calendar and order your young plants.
Plants to harvest this month include:
| Brussels Sprouts | Ready when they are firm. Start at the base and work up, pushing them downwards sharply. Flavour gets better when they have been frosted. |
| Leeks | Can be lifted from the ground as needed. |
| Parsnips | Can be lifted as needed. Take care when lifting not to damage the roots. Using a fork might be helpful. |
